Chef is Convex's answer to a specific gap in AI app builders: they generate frontends fluently but leave the backend as an exercise for the user. As a fork of bolt.diy adapted for Convex, Chef generates full-stack applications whose data layer, authentication, file storage, real-time subscriptions, and scheduled functions are wired to Convex's reactive database from the start, so the output is a functioning product rather than a mockup. It runs hosted at chef.convex.dev with a free tier, and the codebase — including its system prompt, published openly — can be self-hosted for teams that want control. The builder targets founders and product engineers who want working backends (not just UI) from a prompt, and it doubles as a showcase for Convex as a backend-as-a-service platform. It is under active development by the Convex team with a growing open-source community.
